Basic Techniques of Photography — Understanding photography according to Wikipedia is the process of painting/writing using light media. As a general term, means the process or method to produce images or photos of an object. By recording the reflected light on the object on light-sensitive media. The most popular tool to capture this light is the camera.

Photography has a lot of techniques that must be known, and we must learn. Through these techniques will produce a different picture according to the usefulness of each technique.

In this first part posting, I will discuss 10 Basic Photography Techniques that you must know and learn as a photographer namely Motion Blur Photography, HDR, Night Photography, Flash Photography, High-Key Photography, RAW Processing, Smoke Art Photography, Panoramic Photography, Candlelight Photography, and Architecture Photography.
 

Motion Blur Photography

Motion Blur technique is obtained by utilizing the speed of a moving object. Motion blur photos can also be done with a regular camera using the slow shutter speed. To get better motion blur results, use image editing application such as Photoshop.
 

HDR

High Dynamic Range / HDR is one of the basic techniques of photography. HDR is useful for getting better lighting in taking pictures, so the results come alive.

This technique also requires image editing application to rearrange the photos, so that, the results are optimal. This technique can be done with RAW auto exposure photos and repeated photographs, for example, by taking 5 photos with exposures from -2 to +2.
 

Night Photography

This technique is carried out at night when lighting is lacking. Night photography uses lighting and time in taking photos. The light needed can use a lamp.

The results of this technique will be determined by the aperture adjusted to the time of the photo.
 

Flash Photography

Flash support devices are not just to help with the lighting but can be used as a photography technique. Flash also gives focus to the desired object when taking photos, giving the intensity of light at a certain point, maximizing the texture of an object.

Flash can also provide different colors if a color filter is placed in front of it.
 

High-Key Photography

High-Key Photography is a photo that is often used by women and children because this photo shows beauty on their delicate skin.

This technique uses strong light intensity as well as light settings that aim to show the beauty of the object being a photograph and eliminate the disturbing shadows.
 

RAW Processing

RAW is an image that is taken without compressing the image file. Compression can reduce image quality and will not get maximum results.

RAW format photos like a variable in photography must be processed again in accordance with needs with image editing application.
 

Smoke Art Photography

This is one of the basics photography techniques for taking smoke photos because the smoke has flexible curves that vary according to the air and the wind conditions in a room.

This smoke photo-taking can use incense, because it is cheap, flexible, and also durable. For the color of smoke in this photo, the technique can be changed with the image editing application to make it look alive.
 

Panoramic Photography

Panoramic Photography is a basic photography technique to get a wide photo of the environment/landscape. Photos from this technique can be taken by combining several photos horizontally into one elongated photo.

This technique can be used by a camera or smartphone. For camera use it is recommended to use a tripod, so that the resulting image is stable and not blurry.
 

Candlelight Photography

In addition to smoke, candles can also be used as object photos. Taking photos of candles is usually using ISO 1600 or more, also uses a large aperture that is useful for capturing the motion of fire. It would be better if the flash device is not used, also use exposure manually.

In order for photos to look more artistic and shadows produced from candles are smoother, it is better to use a lot of candles in taking photographs.
 

Architecture Photography

Architecture Photography brings out the artistic and beauty side of a building. Building objects are usually houses, offices, old buildings, castles, museums, and others. Taking photos of this building is strongly influenced by the pattern, texture, and color of the object.
